Hook, Line & Sinker: Your Ultimate Guide to the 2026 Texas International Fishing Tournament (TIFT) in South Padre Island

Hook, Line & Sinker: Your Ultimate Guide to the 2026 Texas International Fishing Tournament (TIFT) in South Padre Island

Howdy, anglers! If you’re ready to trade the daily grind for sparkling turquoise waters, big bites, and that unbeatable coastal excitement, it’s time to reel in your plans for the Texas International Fishing Tournament — better known as TIFT.

Texas’ largest saltwater fishing tournament brings together serious anglers, families, and fishing fans for five days of competition, camaraderie, and pure Gulf Coast fun. Hosted in the beautiful waters around South Padre Island and Port Isabel, TIFT celebrates the thrill of bay and offshore fishing in the legendary Laguna Madre and Gulf of Mexico.

The 86th Annual Texas International Fishing Tournament runs Wednesday, July 29 through Sunday, August 2, 2026. Expect up to 1,500 anglers and 500+ boats hitting the water for two full days of fishing (Friday and Saturday), with plenty of festivities before and after.

Why TIFT Feels Like the Ultimate Texas Fishing Adventure

Set against the backdrop of sunny beaches, warm breezes, and world-class fishing grounds, TIFT is more than just a tournament — it’s a vibrant celebration of Texas coastal life. Whether you’re competing for big prizes in categories like redfish, trout, flounder, offshore species, or just soaking up the atmosphere, the event has a welcoming, family-friendly vibe.

You’ll find everything from early-morning departures and weigh-ins to evening parties, live music, and that classic South Padre Island energy. It’s the perfect mix of competition, relaxation, and making memories with friends or family on the water.

 Don’t Miss These TIFT Highlights

- Two Days of Fishing Action: Anglers head out for bay and offshore catches on Friday and Saturday. One good fishing day still makes it a full tournament even if weather interferes.

- Weigh-Ins & Awards: Exciting daily weigh-ins where the biggest catches get their moment in the spotlight, followed by the final awards ceremony.

-VIP Sponsor Party & Social Events: Kick things off with registration, parties, and networking for sponsors and participants.

- Family-Friendly Atmosphere: Even if you’re not fishing, enjoy the coastal setting, spectator opportunities, and South Padre Island vibes.

- Scholarship Support: TIFT gives back by funding scholarships and supporting local causes — fishing with a purpose!

 Coastal Bites & Tournament Vibes

After a long day on the water (or cheering from shore), refuel with fresh seafood and classic coastal favorites available around South Padre Island and Port Isabel:

- Fresh shrimp, fish tacos, ceviche, and grilled catches of the day

- Classic Texas fair-style eats like corn dogs, funnel cakes, and cold drinks

- Plenty of waterfront restaurants and bars serving up cold beer, margaritas, and island-inspired meals

Pro tip: Celebrate your catch (or just the day) with a waterfront dinner — nothing beats fresh Gulf seafood after a tournament day!

Tips for Attending or Participating in TIFT 2026

- Registration: Anglers should register early through the official site (tift.org) — spots fill up with hundreds of boats and participants. Check for entry fees, rules, and categories.

- Getting There: South Padre Island is at the southern tip of Texas — about a 9–10 hour drive from the Dallas/Fort Worth area (including Euless), or an easy flight into Brownsville or Harlingen followed by a short drive. Port Isabel and South Padre offer plenty of marinas, lodging, and amenities.

- Where to Stay: Book hotels, condos, or RV spots early — summer is peak season on the island. Many participants stay right on South Padre for easy access to the water.

- What to Bring/Wear: Sunscreen, hats, polarized sunglasses, comfortable fishing clothes (or casual island wear), and plenty of water. Follow all tournament rules for safety and conservation.

- For Spectators & Families: You don’t have to fish to enjoy the event — watch the weigh-ins, explore the beaches, or enjoy everything South Padre has to offer (dolphin watching, beach time, shopping, and more).

- Best Strategy: Arrive mid-week for registration and festivities. Check the full schedule on tift.org for exact times, weather updates, and event details. Respect the water and practice catch-and-release where appropriate.

Whether you’re a seasoned offshore angler chasing trophies, a bay fisherman looking for reds and trout, or just someone who loves the fishing lifestyle, the Texas International Fishing Tournament delivers big excitement and unforgettable coastal memories.

Mark your calendars for July 29 – August 2, 2026. Grab your rods, your sunscreen, and your sense of adventure — I’ll see you on the water (or cheering from the docks) in South Padre Island!

Are you team bay fishing or offshore? What’s the biggest catch you’ve ever reeled in (or dreamed of)?

Drop your fishing stories in the comments below — I’m always collecting tales before my next coastal road trip!

Your Ultimate Guide to the 2026 Pecan Street Festival

Howdy from Austin! Your Ultimate Guide to the 2026 Pecan Street Festival

Howdy, y’all! If you’re looking for a perfect blend of world-class art, live music, delicious food, and that signature Austin creativity, mark your calendar for the Pecan Street Festival — one of Central Texas’s most beloved arts, crafts, and music celebrations.

This juried festival brings together hundreds of talented local and national artisans for two fun-filled days of shopping, strolling, grooving to live tunes, and soaking up good vibes. Originally held on historic Sixth Street (also known as Pecan Street), it now shines at the beautiful Hill Country Galleria in Bee Cave, just minutes from downtown Austin. With free admission and plenty of free parking, it’s an easy and enjoyable outing for the whole family.

The 2026 Pecan Street Festival happens twice this year:

- Spring Festival: Saturday, May 9 (11 AM – 9 PM) & Sunday, May 10 (11 AM – 8 PM)

- Fall Festival: Saturday, September 12 (11 AM – 9 PM) & Sunday, September 13 (11 AM – 8 PM)

Why the Pecan Street Festival Feels So Austin

This event captures the creative heart of the Live Music Capital of the World. You’ll wander among hundreds of booths featuring original handcrafted works in every medium imaginable — jewelry, pottery, woodwork, metal art, fiber arts, glass, leather, painting, photography, and clever repurposed creations. It’s a shopper’s paradise with unique finds you won’t see anywhere else.

Add in multiple stages of live music (from singer-songwriters and bands to acoustic sets), kid-friendly activities, carnival rides, and an array of food vendors, and you’ve got a relaxing, inspiring weekend that feels like a true Austin celebration. The festival also gives back — proceeds support local nonprofits and community causes.

 Don’t Miss These Festival Highlights

- Juried Art & Crafts Booths: Hundreds of artists showcasing one-of-a-kind pieces — perfect for unique gifts, home decor, or a special treat for yourself.

- Live Music on Multiple Stages: Enjoy everything from local favorites and songwriter rounds to upbeat performances that keep the energy high.

- Food Court Variety: Grab everything from sweet treats and festival classics to healthy options and regional favorites.

- Kids’ Activities & Carnival Rides: Face painting, art workshops, rides, and plenty of fun to keep little ones entertained.

- Relaxed Atmosphere at Hill Country Galleria: Beautiful outdoor setting with shops, easy parking, and room to stroll.

Festival Food Favorites

Come hungry! The food vendors offer a tasty mix of indulgent and fresh options:

- Classic festival bites like **funnel cakes**, crepes, and corn dogs

- Fresh-squeezed lemonade and smoothies

- Regional and international flavors, plus healthier choices

- Sweet endings with plenty of desserts to share (or not!)

Pro tip: Pace yourself with the sampling — there’s a lot to discover while you wander.

Tips for Visiting the 2026 Pecan Street Festival

- Admission & Parking: Completely free! Plenty of free parking at the Hill Country Galleria makes it stress-free. You can come and go as you please.

- Getting There: The Galleria is in Bee Cave, an easy drive from central Austin, Round Rock, or even a fun day trip from the Dallas area (about 3–4 hours from Euless). Use rideshares or plan your route via MoPac or Loop 1 for smooth sailing.

- What to Wear/Bring: Comfortable walking shoes (you’ll cover a lot of ground), sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle. Layers work well for spring or fall weather — mild days with possible evening cool-downs.

- Best Strategy: Arrive early for the best parking and to beat any midday crowds. Check the official website (pecanstreetfestival.org) closer to the date for the full music lineup, festival map, and schedule. Download any event app if available.

- For Families: Kid zones, rides, and interactive activities make it welcoming for all ages.

- Combine with Austin: Pair your visit with a trip downtown, a stop at the Hill Country wineries, or exploring Bee Cave and nearby attractions.

Whether you’re an art collector, a music lover, a foodie, or just someone who enjoys a vibrant outdoor festival, the Pecan Street Festival delivers creativity, community, and classic Austin charm in a beautiful setting.

Mark your calendars now for the Spring dates (May 9–10) or Fall dates (September 12–13), 2026. Grab your walking shoes, your wallet (for those irresistible finds), and your sense of fun — I’ll see you at the Hill Country Galleria!

Why should fans monetarily support they favorite artist?

Why should fans monetarily support they favorite artist?

It's important for fans to actively support the artists they like because in today's music and creative landscape, genuine fan support often determines whether those artists can sustain their careers, keep creating, and reach more people—especially since passive consumption (like casual streaming) provides very little financial return.

Here are the key reasons why fan support matters so much:

Most artists earn very little from streaming

Platforms like Spotify or Apple Music pay fractions of a cent per stream (often $0.003–$0.005). An artist typically needs millions of streams to earn meaningful money—equivalent to a modest living wage. Streaming has made music widely accessible, but it rarely supports creators directly unless they're already massive stars. Without additional support, many talented artists can't afford to keep producing music full-time.

Direct purchases and actions provide real income

Buying official merchandise, physical albums/vinyl, concert tickets, or supporting via platforms like Patreon, Bandcamp, or direct fan-funding gives artists a much higher percentage of the revenue (often 70%+ for merch compared to tiny streaming cuts). Merch sales and live shows frequently become an artist's main or most reliable income sources, especially for independent or mid-tier creators.

Fan support helps build and sustain careers long-term

Dedicated fans (often called "superfans") drive visibility and momentum by:

Streaming and sharing music to boost algorithms and chart positions

Attending shows (which sells out tours and creates buzz)

Buying merch/tickets (which funds recording, tours, and living expenses)

Advocating/voting in awards, fan polls (e.g., Rock & Roll Hall of Fame fan votes), or coordinated efforts

This turns casual listeners into a community that helps artists grow, secure better opportunities, and weather industry changes like algorithm shifts or platform policy updates.

It preserves artistic diversity and the music you love

When fans support what they truly enjoy—especially smaller, independent, or local artists—it keeps diverse voices alive rather than letting the industry default to whatever major labels or algorithms push. Without support, many artists burn out, quit, or pivot to other jobs, reducing the variety and quality of art available.

It's a mutual relationship

Artists often share vulnerabilities, behind-the-scenes content, and personal journeys with fans. Active support (financial or emotional) shows appreciation, builds loyalty, and motivates creators to keep going. Many artists say fan encouragement during tough times (illness, financial struggles, or creative blocks) makes a huge difference.

We would love to have you come out and support our great group of contestants at the Texas State Songwriters Championship Association. 4 qualifying rounds and then the final showdown!

Will you be an artist or fan at the FINALE?

Keep Austin Weird & Wonderful: Your Ultimate Guide to SXSW 2026

Howdy from the Live Music Capital of the World!

If you love music, film, tech innovation, and that unmistakable Austin energy, there’s no bigger or more exciting event than South by Southwest (SXSW).

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, SXSW has evolved from a scrappy music festival into a global gathering where creatives, innovators, filmmakers, and music lovers converge for one wild, inspiring week.

For 2026, everything runs concurrently for the first time: the Innovation Conference, Film & TV Festival, Music Festival, and Comedy Festival all happening together over seven exciting days and nights from Thursday, March 12 through Wednesday, March 18, 2026 across Austin, Texas.

Why SXSW Feels Like Pure Austin Magic

SXSW captures the creative soul of Texas like nothing else. By day, you can attend thought-provoking panels on AI, startups, culture, climate, and the creator economy. By night, the city explodes with hundreds of live music showcases in iconic venues, film premieres, comedy sets, and parties that spill out onto the streets. It’s where breakthrough artists get discovered, future tech gets previewed, and unforgettable memories are made under the Austin sky.

The vibe is electric yet welcoming—whether you’re a badge holder diving deep into sessions or soaking up the free and open-to-the-public energy downtown. Expect big crowds, big ideas, and that classic “Keep Austin Weird” spirit.

Don’t Miss These SXSW 2026 Highlights

-Music Festival: Seven full days and nights of showcases featuring legendary acts, rising stars, and local favorites. Past years have spotlighted everything from indie rock to global sounds—2026 promises even more with an expanded schedule.

- Film & TV Festival: Premieres of buzzy independent films, documentaries, and TV projects, plus panels with directors and creators.

- Innovation Conference: Sessions and keynotes on tech, marketing, AI, startups, sports & gaming, and more—perfect for networking and inspiration.

- Comedy & Interactive Events: Stand-up sets, brand activations, exhibitions, and parties all over town.

- Downtown Energy: Venues on Sixth Street, Rainey Street, and beyond come alive with pop-up performances and street vibes.

SXSW Bites: Eat Your Way Through Austin

Austin’s food scene shines during SXSW. Fuel up with:

- Classic Texas barbecue (brisket, ribs, and sausage)

- Breakfast tacos, food trucks galore, and fusion eats

- Fresh Gulf seafood, vegan options, and creative festival-style bites

- Cold local beers, craft cocktails, and plenty of coffee to keep the energy high

Pro tip: Hit the food trucks and pop-up vendors downtown—sampling is half the adventure!

Tips for Experiencing SXSW 2026

- Badges & Access: Official badges (Platinum, Music, Film, etc.) give priority access to sessions, showcases, and parties. Many music events are open to the public or have affordable wristbands—check sxsw.com for details and presale info. Free events and street performances happen all week too.

- Getting Around Austin: Downtown is walkable, but use rideshares, scooters, or the CapMetro bus/rail system. Parking is tough—plan to walk or ride. Book hotels, Airbnbs, or stays in nearby areas early (they fill fast!).

- What to Wear/Bring: Comfortable shoes (you’ll log serious miles), layers for cool March evenings, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and a portable charger. Download the SXSW app or check the schedule online for daily lineups.

- Best Strategy: Decide what matters most—music showcases, film screenings, or conference sessions—and build your days around that. Arrive early for popular events. Pace yourself with the late nights and big crowds. Weekdays can feel slightly less intense than weekends.

- For First-Timers or Families: Focus on daytime panels and free outdoor events if you want a lower-key experience. Many locals enjoy the spillover music scene without a badge.

Whether you’re chasing the next big band, discovering indie films, networking in tech, or just soaking up the creative chaos, SXSW 2026 delivers an unforgettable mix of inspiration, discovery, and pure Texas fun.

Mark your calendars for March 12–18, 2026. Grab your badge (or your walking shoes), your sense of adventure, and your appetite for new ideas—I’ll see you in Austin keeping it weird!

Are you heading to SXSW for the music, the films, the tech talks, or all of the above? What’s one must-do on your SXSW list? Drop it in the comments below. I’m always adding new favorites before my next trip down to Austin!

myth

Recycling Myth #3: “It will get sorted anyway.”

Myth Busted! Myth: "If it does not belong in the recycling cart, it will get sorted anyway." Items that do not belong in the recycling cart are often referred to as wishcycled items, which is the act of trying to recycle items that cannot be recycled in Fort Worth.

While it's commendable to recycle with good intentions, wishcycling can create significant problems in the recycling process, resulting in increased waste. Mixed recycling products, such as dog food bags or glittery paper, can pose challenges during recycling. Plastic bags and entanglers such as hoses and outdoor lights can damage recycling machinery before they are sorted.

Here are some easy steps you can take to avoid wishcycling in your blue recycling cart:

  • Check your items before purchasing them.
  • Stick to the basics of paper/cardboard, plastic, metal, and glass. You can also use the Waste Wizard tool available on the website at www.fortworthtexas.gov/solidwaste or on the Fort Worth Garbage & Recycling App.
  • Be sure to empty any food or liquid residue, clean the items, and allow them to dry to prevent contamination.

America recycles

Save the date for
America Recycles Day!

The City of Fort Worth is celebrating America Recycles Day! Enjoy a week full of family fun with recycling activities and hands-on learning. With story time, arts and crafts from recycled materials, recycling games, and more, there are plenty of chances to participate in the fun.

Also, on November 15 from 10 am – 12 pm, stop by the Golden Triangle Library and the Vivian J. Lincoln Library for live demonstrations, interactive booths with recycling education, promotional giveaways, and a special guest appearance from WM.

Mark your Calendars for November 15, and we will see you there!

  • How to use drip irrigation
  • Why insects are good for gardens
  • Composting basics

Keep Fort Worth Beautiful (KFWB) team member, Natalie Nava, gave a composting presentation in both English and Spanish. She explained how to build a compost bin, reviewed the basics, and shared helpful resources.

Another KFWB team member, Veronica Mendez, greeted participants at the KFWB booth. She shared details about upcoming events, answered questions, and handed out resources.

The next YardSmart seminar will be held in spring 2025. Don’t miss the chance to learn more about keeping your yard healthy and eco-friendly.

Visit the Save Fort Worth Water website to learn more about keeping your yard healthy and eco-friendly.

fire

Enjoying Outdoor
Fires in a Safe Way

Cooler weather means more people are spending time outside. This is a good time to remind everyone what is and isn’t allowed when it comes to outdoor burning.  Clean air is important for everyone’s health—especially kids, older adults, and people with breathing problems like asthma. Outdoor burning can create smoke and pollution, so Texas has rules to limit it.

Outdooring is not allowed to burn household waste such as trash, yard waste or other household items or when burn bans are in effect by the county to prevent wildfires.

In most cases, outdoor burning in Texas is not allowed, but there are a few exceptions such as bonfires, campfires, and outdoor cooking with clean, untreated wood.

If you are allowed to burn, always:

  • Call your fire department before you start.
  • Check the weather and wind so smoke does not blow into neighboring homes or across roads.
  • Avoid burning on Air Pollution Action Days, when the air is already unhealthy.

Residents who notice air quality issues can report them through the MyFW App, by calling 817-392-1234, or by emailing environmental@fortworthtexas.gov. The City investigates all reports, and violators may face fines or enforcement actions through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Reports can be made anonymously.

For additional information on air quality, visit the website.
